Marie Magdalene “Marlene” Dietrich (/mrlenditrk/; German pronunciation: [malen ditç]; 27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992) was a German-American actress and singer who was born in Germany and raised in the United States. Dietrich maintained her popularity throughout her lengthy career by constantly reinventing herself, both professionally and in terms of her personal style. While living in Berlin in the 1920s, she performed onstage as well as in silent films. When she appeared in the film The Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg, she gained worldwide recognition and signed a contract with Paramount Pictures, which would later become Paramount Pictures in the United States. The elegance and exotic features she had were used in Hollywood films such as Shanghai Express (1932) and Desire (1936), solidifying her fame and elevating her to the ranks of the highest-paid actresses of the period. Dietrich became a citizen of the United States in 1939, and she remained a high-profile frontline performer during World War II. Dietrich spent the most of the 1950s through the 1970s travelling the globe as a popular show performer, despite the fact that she continued to make infrequent films in the postwar years. When the American Film Institute ranked Dietrich the seventh greatest female star of all time in 1999, Dietrich was ecstatic.
